Video
Streaming
Video streaming refers to the process whereby live
video and audio signals are broadcast around the Internet
and can be seen via free multimedia software applications
such as RealNetworks RealPlayer, or alternatively where
a user downloads a file across the network and the
player is launched simultaneously.
Hence video conferences can be streamed either live
onto the Internet, to enable those that do not have
conferencing facilities to view what is going on as
it happens, or else archived and made available afterwards.
This is especially useful where different time zones
are involved. In both instances the URL at which the
conference can be viewed will need to be advertised.
Video streaming can also allow a live event to be broadcast
to those participating in a video conference through
a PC or other interface for discussion during the conference.
The addition of streaming technology can hugely increase
the number of people that can participate in a video
conference. As the streaming of video and audio is
generally one way, however solutions have been developed
that allow for interaction via the web, whereby users
can post question to the expert broadcasting the video
conference. E2BN offers a video streaming service and
details of this found of these in the core facilities
section.
